It shocks me that Americans don't know that the Democrat Party, since 1829, has fought every idea to improve the lives of former slaves. Before the Civil War, the Democrat Party defended slavery, fought in the Civil War to preserve slavery. They founded the Ku Klux Klan, they reinforced the Jim Crow laws, imposed segregation, lynchings, and they fought against the Civil Rights Act of 1866 through 1968, as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. All civil rights bills were written by and promoted by Republicans. They were founded as the anti-slavery party.  So for the last 150 years, Republicans proposed and supported each and every civil rights legislation. We've had to fight the Democrats all through this.
