Remembering Personal Details

Yesterday, I picked up the phone and called an old family friend.  Fred answered after a few rings.  I had not spoken to him since 2007, but as I started to explain who I was, he remembered and said, “Steve, aren’t you Jack’s son?  How are your parents doing?”  We talked for some time and caught up on years of developments.

I always admired Fred and, as an adult, had the honor of working with him on some state legislation.  As we were discussing some of that, it struck me again how acute his memory was.  The more I thought about it, though, the more I started to realize that his gift wasn't just remembering my name, but remembering the specifics of who I was.

Fred is an amazing and honorable man and I learned from him the value of showing respect by not only making the effort to remember someone’s name, but by taking the time to remember things of value to that individual.  People matter and acknowledging that to them earns deep respect.
